Random Sunday

Well, it’s official. The running shorts are packed away and the fall tights are out. I could have actually put my head band on to cover my ears because it was pretty windy.

I went for an easy 30 minute run this morning. It was alright.. nothing overly special but I was glad I got my legs moving and a morning run in. I have been running with my iPod lately and today I officially decided that it drives me crazy. I really enjoy listening to music but I find the iPod itself to be such a hassle… whether the cord gets tangled, or I stop to skip a song, or… I don’t know, maybe I’m just the crazy OCD one. That’s probably the case eh. My calves have been HURTING lately and I feel like I have knots in them. What causes this? GMan has tried to massage them out for me but the knots are still there. Any suggestions?

IMG_2518 so attractive… i know.

On the news the other day they were talking about how often one should wash their hair. Well, they interviewed a lady that washes her hair every 6-7 weeks. YES, WEEKS! Can you believe it? I can’t. She must not exercise or sweat and if she does.. well, what’s her secret?
———————–

Have you heard about this Lady? She and her family vowed to not buy food from supermarkets, convenience stores, box stores or restaurants for ONE YEAR. You can check out her blog here. Although they have completed their year, they plan to continue on. Could you go one year WITHOUT grocery stores and restaurants? I think it would be really difficult to go without grocery stores. I love grocery shopping – most of the time. Restaurants, I could do without… I think.

Last night GMan and I watched an interesting (and horrifying all the same) on CNN with Anderson Cooper; Bullying: It Stops Here – and learned about the documentary The Bully Project. Have you heard about it? You can watch the trailer HERE. It is eye opening, heart breaking and gives viewers an idea of what some children and families go through on a daily basis. One thing that absolutely SHOCKED me was that a school district in Minnesota does not allow teachers to discuss homosexuality in school (source). Kids are being beat on verbally and physically on a daily basis and if they go to a school councillor for help and explain the situation and the names they are being called by the bullies,  the staff then tell the victims to “not use that language” whether it be the F word or the word “gay”. They totally ignore the fact that the child’s self-esteem is being beat down and that they are trying to reach out for help. How can a system fail their students on such a high level? I could in no way imagine sending my child to school knowing that they are not being protected. In fact, one boy left school and is now home schooled because he felt so unsafe and was bullied so badly at school because of his sexuality.

I know this is such a complex topic but I feel it does not get the attention it deserves. I know there will always be bullies in life but it is our responsibility as a society, as parents, communities and especially in schools, to protect our kids. Where the hell are the bullies parents? I think it starts in the home and escalates from there. Go check out The Bully Project trailer and pass it on!

Have a happy Sunday all!!

Refreshed and Thankful

Well (Canadian) Thanksgiving is over and Fall is in full force. We have been spoiled with what feels like Summertime weather which means the sandals are not packed away yet!  Apart from today being an all-day rainy day, the weather has been incredible!

I have been MIA on the blog here but hope to get back in the swing of things. The past few weeks have been quite stressful for G-Man and I but of course we push through times like that by really relying and supporting one another and making sure to take time for the two of us. I think I’ve mentioned before that I can’t function without sleep. At. All. And last week, I didn’t get much sleep which meant having little motivation to go for a run. Although sometimes I find that when I’m in a ‘funk’, the best thing to do is lace up and go for a run… so I did just that.

We went to my parents for Thanksgiving weekend and also celebrated my Mother’s birthday. We didn’t have a turkey dinner (which I was totally fine with. I did not miss the feeling of being stuffed and tired after a big dinner!). I had a fabulous visit with my girlfriends. There is a group of 10 of us who have been friends forever (some for over 17 yrs!) and it can be difficult for all 10  of us to get together. Friday night we made it happen and had a great time catching up.

Saturday morning we were up and out the door earlllly. The Madre , G-Man and I hit up St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market. Even though we got there early it was PACKED. We went straight to The Fritter Co. because well… it’s tradition and if we wait until later in the day, we would be waiting in line for over an hour. They are mighty good, but quite frankly I would not want to wait in line for over an hour to eat one.

These babies are made with fresh apples and although they are not the healthiest they are still yummy. I think I enjoy eating them more so for the tradition with my Mom than the actual taste itself… if that makes any sense.

St. Jacobs Market is HUGE. You will find anything and everything there, if you take the time to look and of course, lots and LOTS of fresh produce. The prices are reasonable too you just have to make sure you are buy local. Some vendors are sneaky and try to sell produce from different countries.

I love how a lot of the booths have samples you can try before purchasing their product. You can never go wrong with samples! Or maybe you can…

One man claimed he had "the best hummus in the world", so of course I wanted to try some. Before I could stop him he gave me a scoop of every dip he sold, on one chip.. Needless to say, I think he was lying about the "best hummus on the world". To many flavours at once!
There are lots of buskers playing music which I really like.. if they sound good, of course. No but really, I give anyone credit that can get up and perform in front of a crowd because I know it’s not easy.

One thing that I didn’t over enjoy was that there were sooo many dogs. Personally, I don’t feel like a market is a place for dogs, ESPECIALLY when it’s so so crowded.  I did however, LOVE seeing all the horses… I LOVE horses!!

We took my Mom out for Chinese food for her birthday. Good conversation over good food! Of course, I had my favourite soup.

After this weekend, I came home with a warmed soul and feeling refreshed. I think it’s so important to take the time to visit and catch up with the people that mean the most because really, for me that’s the most important thing in life; family and friends.
——————————

On the fitness front, well I did get some movement in this weekend. On Friday, I did a killer workout on the TRX that left me feeling sore for a good three days. Maybe I’ll share the workout with you tomorrow.  Sunday, I ran hard for a full 12 minutes (gasp!). I know, I know… hard core. I didn’t mind though because my body was still very sore. Today, I ran for an hour and felt amazing! It was a great run and left me feeling strong.

What are YOU thankful for?

Resting the legs and not making excuses but results

Can we talk about The Biggest Loser for a minute, please?

I LOVE THAT SHOW! The stories, the determination and the transformation are incredible. I always loved listening to Jillian Michaels and Bob in the gym and the way they worked their teams. I must say though that I am thoroughly enjoying the new trainers. They bring something different to the show. I feel bad for Anna Kournikova though because her team hasn’t been shining as much as the others which may make people question her ability to train. I don’t think it does though – in any way. It would be an amazing experience to train with her.

dolvett
Dolvett on the other hand.. Oh my. Now, I would LOVE to train with him and no, not only because he does have a rocking body. I love his philosophy and hard @ss positive attitude in the gym. Don’t make excuses, make results! – I love that! When he was yelling that at his team during the last chance workout that really jumped out at me.

Speaking of working out, my runs have really been sucking lately. I haven’t had a good run since my awesome run on the country roads. What’s the deal?! My legs are tight, I can’t find my groove and at times the bottoms of my feet hurt. What would that be from… maybe I need a new pair of shoes? I didn’t run today to give the ol’ legs a break. Maybe they just need a rest.. that’s what I’m hoping. I did level 2 of Yoga Meltdown… man, what a good workout! I love that it’s a short but a heart racing workout with nothing needed other than your body (and maybe a mat for comfort).  As much as I love to run, changing it up a bit never hurts. Although, here’s hoping that I can lace up tomorrow and hit the pavement for a decent run!

What shoes do you run in? What’s your favourite brand?
~I have been running in Brooks Adrenaline GTS 10 and have loved them. I also really like Mizuno too.
