Getting old and loaded with protein

This morning I stepped out the door as G-Man was leaving for work thinking that I would get out the door for a run shortly there after… well, let me tell you.. I jumped right back inside, hummed and hawed for a few minutes and decided to workout inside instead. I find the the transition of Winter to be so difficult. With that being said, I need to suck it up and lace up and get out the door because I really am itching to go for a run. I did however have a great workout. radioactive runner

I did level 2 of Yoga Meltdown and about 40 jump squats on the TRX.  If you haven’t tried that video yet, I highly recommend it!  If you need an extra push [and let’s face it, sometimes we all do] go and read this motivational letter!

Look what we did last night… IMG_2711G-Man needs glasses, so he went to pick them out. He wasn’t overly excited but I told him he should be happy that he hasn’t needed them sooner… and that that’s what happens when you get old ;)  I’m obviously kidding though!! He was also quite please that I documented the whole thing.

This morning I made a green shake and put the usual in which is a banana, chocolate milk and a blender full of spinach (normally I add protein powder but I’m all out right now) and for some odd reason, I added a few pieces of pineapple. Worst. mistake. ever. Don’t do it! It tasted awful. I chugged about two and a half cups of it to try and get it down but couldn’t do any more. I hate wasting but this morning I just had to.

Remember how much I loved Chobani yogurt when I tried it awhile back? and remember how they don’t sell it here in Canada? Well, I found a Greek yogurt that I like almost just as much.
oikos yogurt

Oikios Greek Yogurt. I bought the plain kind because it has less sugar and I like adding homemade jam to add flavour.  The nutritional facts are great.. 120 calories in 3/4 cup, 4 g of fat, 7g of sugar and carbs and 17 g of PROTEIN! I was pretty impressed with the amount of protein it has. So for all of you Canadians that enjoy Chobani, you should give this one a try too!

Shopping, eating and working out

Tuesday is already upon us but let’s do a little recap of the weekend, shall we?

Saturday, I worked with G-Man and despite it being a verrrrryyy long day, we had a lot of fun.  I love shooting weddings and this one was so classy and beautiful. It is an honour to be such a big part of our couples special day.  I did not wake up extra early to workout because I knew I was going to be on my feet ALL day, so I opted for the extra hour of sleep instead and thank goodness for that (not only my sake but for  the hubby as well, so he didn’t have to put up with a tired Sabrina).

Although Sunday was a busy day as well, it was nice to have a day with just the two of us and be on our own schedule. IMG_2690We did some running around and then went to the outlets in Niagara Falls to take a look around. I really wanted to find some new running bras. I won’t tell you how long it has been since I’ve bought new ones but I will tell you that I bought two new ones! I bought the NIKE pro combat compression sports bra for only $25.00 each. IMG_2701I also bought a pair of jeans and these babies from Nine West:
IMG_2706I would not consider myself a high heels kind of girl … but when I go out – as in to an event or party, I do like to wear them… and I can’t wait to wear these!

After my stomach started eating itself and getting the shakes from my beverage of choice in the morning (remember? I don’t do well with caffeine), I was ready to call it a day. Does anyone else find that shopping makes them SO tired?!

We hit up a local Mexican restaurant Chile and Agave on the way home. It was our first time there and overall it was an okay experience. The ambiance is basic yet nice and I really enjoyed the music. We started out with “sopa de tortilla” and it was really good.

I had the “ensalada azteca” and I didn’t really like it. I swear there was an entire chopped onion in the salad. I couldn’t eat it because of the onion overload which turned me off.

G-Man had “tacos al pastor” and really liked them. I don’t think I would go back.. maybe for the soup. I would much rather enjoy G-Man’s amazing authentic Mexican cooking in the comfort of our own home.
IMG_2699Yesterday, I hit up the gym and had a great workout. I did the Stairmaster for 30 minutes and then did the following:

2 minutes full out [of each move] with 10-20 seconds rest between each move:
*exception: 3 minutes of jumping jack squats

~Jumping Jack squats
~Skaters  (you can see an example here)
~High Knees
~Leg raises – laying flat on back, legs out
~Push ups
~Burpees
~Plank Jacks
~Rotating side to side lunges

It was INTENSE. I was trying not to moan and groan but my body was literally trembling from pushing myself so hard. For the push ups, after the first minute, I had to modify and go to my knees because it was tough. My body is a bit sore today and I can definitely feel that I pushed myself, although, I feel GOOD and can’t WAIT to do it again!  I love being able to get such a great workout with simple exercises in a short amount of time.

~What was your workout today?!

~Would you rather stay on a machine at the gym for an hour or longer OR push full out for 15-20 minutes and then be finished your workout for the day?
I am loving the high-intensity workouts for sure. If there is a good show on the TV at the gym, it will definitely keep me on the machine longer.

‘Tis the Season

As I sat down to write this,  I was getting all excited thinking there is only one more day to go until the weekend. Man, how WRONG am I? Ok, so it’s only Wednesday.. I get it.

Who watched The Biggest Loser last night? I know I’ve said it before but I just LOVE that show. Oh me oh my, I think Dolvett is such an AWESOME trainer. Who wouldn’t want to train one on one with him? He would seriously kick some butt and he seems to bring out the beast in all of the contestants he’s trained. Who wants to go to his studio in Atlanta to take some of his classes? I know this girl would. I’m in.. better yet, Dolvett, come to Canada to teach some classes please!

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez left a 200% tip at IHop the other day. What a nice surprise that would have been for the server. Umm hello, please come and sit in my little restaurant and I promise to give you the best service ever.

We are soon approaching the Christmas season that’s filled with parties, meetings and family gatherings which can make it more difficult to stay on track with our workouts and eating healthy. A lot of people wait until January to make a New Years resolution to get back on track, or hit the gym … but why wait? Why not start now and go into the New Year feeling refreshed and ready to take on what 2012 has in store for us. Are you with me? That doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a nice family dinner, a few treats, or a glass of wine. The key is to finding that balance to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Here are a few points that we can use as reminders during this holiday season to keep us on track and balanced:

~ Make family time active time: Why not head out the door for a nice walk after a big meal for some quality family time rather than hit the couch and complain about how full we are. Come on, we’ve all done it! Whether it’s a ten minute walk or an hour walk, I guarantee you will return feeling refreshed and feeling good for being active and thankful for quality time well spent. Or why not take the kids, friends or hubby out to play in the snow, make some snow angels or even a snow ball fight? This active family time should be enjoyable and not stressful. None of us need any extra stress over the holidays. IMG_0977 (768x1024)

~ Treat yourself: In order to stay on track that doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself, that you can’t enjoy a treat from the dessert table at the work party or that special dessert your friend made for the annual cocktail party. If you have a craving, allow yourself to enjoy that treat and move on. I find that if I have a craving (let’s say chocolate because really, when am I not craving it), it’s better to just eat a little bit of it (remember, in moderation!) rather than deprive myself and worrying about it because if I do that then I tend to eat everything else in sight to try and fulfill my craving. Trust me, it never works. CupCake7 (1024x678)~ Drink responsibly: Alcohol is full of empty calories but again, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a glass of wine over dinner. Try and go with the smarter option. The average five-ounce glass of red wine contains just under 100 calories. Blended drinks such as a piña colada can clock in at a whopping 450 calories – the equivalent of a double cheeseburger from McDonalds. source: Canadian Living magazine. Yikes!! IMG_2224 (640x480)

~ Don’t make excuses!! – I hear so often "I just don’t have time to go to the gym". Ok, I understand that. Although everyone has an extra 15 minutes in their day to move their body! If you know you’re going to have an extra busy day ahead of you, make time in the morning to workout. Your body will thank you. Not sure where to start? Do some jumping jacks, burpees, or squats in the kitchen. These exercises will get your heart pumping and don’t require a lot of space.

squats

Let’s help each other out to reach our goals and stay balanced rather than waiting until the new year. I know we’ve all heard it before but there is no time better than the present, right?!
